The logo for "Animals in Black Life": a teal circle with white writing around the outside of the circle reading "animals in black life." A line image of a Black woman's head neck and shoulders in the middle. She is wearing a head wrap and turns her face up toward a butterfly that's perched on her nose.

Welcome to Animals in Black Life!

My name is Katheryn Lawson, and I earned my PhD in History from the University of Delaware (2024). My dissertation, entitled  “Care and Control: Black Philadelphians and the Animal City After World War II,” focused on Black Philadelphians and their contributions to animal care, control, and liberation from 1950 to 1990. To learn more about my research, head to the About page

To see see other projects by those who have written and spoken about the Black diaspora’s relationships with animals (now and in the past), head to the Resources page.
